The President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatovic, stated that he will take the decision on calling regular parliamentary elections after consultations with representatives of all parliamentary parties.
Answering journalists’ questions about the statement by the Speaker of Parliament, Andrija Mandic, that elections could be held in six months, Milatovic said he does not want to comment on the motives or information of other political actors, but stressed he will hold meetings with all parties before deciding on the election date.
He recalled that the current composition of Parliament was constituted in 2023 and that next year enters the period when, according to constitutional and legal deadlines, regular parliamentary elections must be held.
Milatovic said one of the topics of the consultations will also be the possibility of parliamentary elections being held on the same day as local elections or separately.
The President also warned that electoral reform has still not been completed, calling this a serious institutional problem that requires an urgent reaction from Parliament.
According to him, if elections had to be called immediately, there would currently be no institution that could organise them, which he considered unacceptable.
Milatovic called on MPs to complete the electoral reform without delay and ensure conditions for holding the next elections properly.
