Mitsotakis: ECB appointments part of a ‘grand bargain’ — hedge funds open offices in Athens

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis told Bloomberg TV that filling the three European Central Bank (ECB) leadership posts opening soon will likely be “a kind of grand bargain”, eKathimerini reported on Friday.

According to the head of the Greek government, official Athens remains neutral toward the candidates for the European monetary institution’s top posts, while the process is expected to be negotiated among European capitals in the spirit of major political compromises.

In the same interview, Mitsotakis noted that hedge funds such as Millennium Management and Chris Rokos’s are opening offices in Athens — a sign, in his view, of Greece’s growing appeal as an investment hub. (Our site reported yesterday on the opening of Millennium’s office in Athens.)

The statements come at a moment when the Greek economy is drawing the attention of international investors, after years of recovery and the country’s return to financial markets.

The appointments at the top of the ECB are expected to be one of the central themes of the European agenda in the coming months, as Athens aims to maintain an active role in discussions on the future of the euro.
