Muslim World League condemns Houthi attack on Medina power station that supplies the Prophet’s Mosque
The Muslim World League has strongly condemned the alleged Houthi attack on the “Taibah” electricity distribution station in Medina, Saudi Arabia, a facility that supplies power to the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid an-Nabawi), as Al Jazeera reports.
In a statement, the organisation called the strike on a facility serving one of Islam’s holiest sites a “dangerous provocation” for Muslims around the world. Secretary General Mohammed bin Abdulkarim al-Issa condemned attacks on civilian infrastructure and religious sanctities, saying they violate Islamic values and basic humanitarian principles, and expressed full solidarity with Saudi Arabia.
The Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthis in Yemen had said on Thursday that the Iran-linked group attacked the power station earlier in the week, according to Reuters, knocking a transformer out of service without affecting the wider power grid. Coalition spokesman Major General Turki al-Maliki said the attack took place at 5:11 a.m. local time on 29 September and that the investigation and examination of drone debris confirmed the Houthis’ involvement in planning and carrying out the attack.
A Houthi military source, quoted by their Saba news agency, denied the accusation, calling it a “lie” and saying it was intended to cover up Saudi Arabia’s failure to prove the earlier accusation that the Houthis targeted Mecca.
