Mustafa: The State Must Provide Financial and Diplomatic Support for the Defense of Former KLA Leaders in The Hague
PDK MP Arben Mustafa has called on Kosovo’s institutions to support with all necessary resources the defense teams of former KLA leaders in the appeals phase. On the “Përballje Podcast” on Telegrafi, he said institutional support must not depend on the Government’s political will.
Speaking about the steps after the first-instance verdict in The Hague, Mustafa said the appeals defense requires the state’s full commitment, both for the work of the defense teams and on the diplomatic plane.
“The state of Kosovo must commit all the resources it has in support of the second-instance defense process, namely the appeal in The Hague, and there is no alternative,” Mustafa declared.
He stressed that, in his view, institutions have a responsibility to ensure the accused a dignified defense as the process continues.
“The state of Kosovo, and not even the Government, must not treat this matter as a matter of goodwill. This is an obligation,” said the PDK MP.
Mustafa called for support for the defense teams and diplomatic engagement by Kosovo’s Government. “Dignified defense must be ensured, both regarding the defense teams and the Government’s diplomatic engagement,” he said.
According to Mustafa, the aim of institutional support must be for the defense teams to have the conditions needed to present their case at the second instance. He said that for PDK only an acquittal would be acceptable, presenting this as the party’s stance on the process.
He calls for a common political approach and support from Albania
Mustafa said differences between parties must be set aside to build a common approach to developments in The Hague. According to him, PDK leader Bedri Hamza has held meetings with Albin Kurti, Lumir Abdixhiku and Ardian Gjini on this issue.
“It is time for unification,” said Mustafa, adding that PDK expects other parties to “reflect positively” on the need to support the defense.
Asked about the role of official Tirana, he said he expects help from Albania and other friendly states. “Of course we expect support from the Government of Albania, and from other friendly states,” Mustafa declared.
The PDK MP described the first-instance verdict as unjust and said he also supports citizens’ protests opposing it. He said that alongside the protests, institutional action must focus on preparing for the appeal and supporting the defense teams.
