Neon challenges A24 with its own SCP Foundation film: horror anthology with rising directors comes to cinemas in 2027

Neon, the independent distribution studio known for films such as “Parasite” and “Longlegs”, has announced it will develop and produce an anthology film based on SCP Foundation — the horror universe created collectively online since 2008, as TheWrap reports. The film is planned for release in cinemas in 2027, with a focus on rising young directors.

SCP Foundation (from the motto “Secure, Contain, Protect”) is a collaborative literary project where thousands of contributors write about a secret organisation that studies and contains supernatural entities and phenomena. According to Neon’s announcement, the studio has committed to releasing the film and related materials under the Creative Commons CC BY-SA licence — open for reuse by the community — and has been in communication with the SCP Wiki site team to respect the licensing guidelines.

The news comes just two weeks after A24 announced on September 11 its own project “V/H/S: SCP”, which brings the universe into the “V/H/S” horror anthology franchise together with Spooky Pictures and Image Nation Studios. The SCP Wiki administration had condemned that project, stating that A24 had never communicated with them and that it cannot have exclusive rights over anything related to SCP Foundation. The story was also reported by ComingSoon.net, Variety, Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter, IndieWire and The Verge.

In its own statement, the SCP Wiki team said Neon “appears to follow all the requirements of our Creative Commons licence”, but stressed that this is not an “official” SCP Foundation film — the staff is not creatively involved and does not benefit financially — and that Neon’s film “is not connected to any previously announced project”. No director, cast or specific date has been announced yet, but the battle for SCP on the big screen looks set to play out in 2027.
