New details on the death of the Albanian footballer in Greece — what do the investigations say?
A serious incident has shaken the sports community in Greece, where 16-year-old footballer Gjana Asllan, of Albanian origin, died in hospital on Tuesday from serious injuries sustained during an official match.
The tragic incident happened on Sunday at the Panagia stadium on the island of Thasos, during the match in which the youngster was playing for his team, Byronas Kavala. In just the second minute of play, after a duel for the ball, the 16-year-old went beyond the touchline and struck the back of his head on the stadium’s protective fence, immediately losing consciousness. Despite the rapid intervention of medics and his transfer to the intensive care unit of Kavala hospital, the teenager did not survive his serious injuries.
Thasos police, together with the Kavala Prosecution, have launched investigations to verify whether the stadium met the required safety standards. The checks will cover the distance of the fence from the touchline, the licensing of the sports facility, and the responsibilities of the organizers for youth-age category matches. The investigations are expected to be completed with witness testimony and the forensic report.
