New “Ebenezer” trailer: Johnny Depp as Scrooge in Ti West’s gothic take on “A Christmas Carol” — in cinemas November 13
Paramount Pictures released the new trailer on Thursday for the film “Ebenezer,” the gothic adaptation of Charles Dickens’s classic novel “A Christmas Carol,” directed by Ti West, the creator of the horror trilogy “X,” “Pearl” and “MaXXXine,” as PEOPLE reports.
The new trailer, around two and a half minutes long, centres on Johnny Depp in the role of Ebenezer Scrooge — his first return to a major studio production since 2018’s “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” according to PEOPLE. The film’s official tagline, “The name you know, the story you don’t,” promises an entirely new perspective on the familiar story of the miser who confronts the ghosts of Christmas.
The new footage emphasises the ghosts, the darkness and the strange comic energy of West’s version: as comicbasics.com writes, Depp gives Scrooge humour, flaws and just enough logic to make him hard to dismiss. The trailer also features Ian McKellen, 87, as the ghost of Jacob Marley, who warns Scrooge about the three spirits that will visit him on Christmas night.
The cast also includes Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Charlie Murphy and Tramell Tillman; the screenplay was written by Nathaniel Halpern and the producer is Emma Watts. The first trailer was unveiled during the summer at San Diego Comic-Con, where Depp appeared unexpectedly in costume as Scrooge before hundreds of fans.
“Ebenezer” is expected to open in U.S. cinemas on November 13, 2026 — on the eve of the holiday season. For Depp, who since his much-discussed trial with ex-wife Amber Heard has appeared mainly in European projects such as “Jeanne du Barry” and as director of “Modi,” the project is considered, as PEOPLE reports, a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
