North Macedonia beaten 0-3 by Switzerland in Nations League B opener
North Macedonia began the 2026/27 edition of the UEFA Nations League with a defeat, losing 0-3 to Switzerland tonight at the “Toše Proeski” national arena in Skopje, in the first-round League B1 match that started at 20:45, as Sport1.mk reports.
The match’s fate was decided by first-half goals and Zeki Amdouni’s brace. Remo Freuler opened the series in the 22nd minute after an Amdouni assist, while Amdouni himself doubled the lead in the 42nd minute after an assist from Zachary Athekame, closing the first half 0-2. The Swiss striker completed his brace in the 74th minute, again with an Athekame assist.
Switzerland dominated the game completely throughout the match: they created 17 chances in the first half, with an on-target shots ratio of 0-11 and ball possession 42-58% in the visitors’ favor. Goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski made several good saves to spare the hosts an even deeper defeat, while Dan Ndoye hit the post in the 27th minute.
The evening’s most dramatic episode came at the start of the second half, when debutant Matej Gashtarov received a direct red card from German referee Daniel Schlager. After VAR intervention, the decision was reviewed: the red card was overturned and replaced with a yellow, so Gashtarov stayed on the pitch.
This was the fifth match with Goce Sedloski in charge in which North Macedonia failed to score a goal. In three days, the Macedonians play away in Ljubljana against Slovenia.
