Novi Beograd secure water polo Champions League TOP 16 — Spandau 04 beaten 21:14

Novi Beograd’s water polo players have secured qualification for the group stage, the TOP 16, of the water polo Champions League. The Serbian runners-up sealed their progress in the qualifying tournament being played in Oradea, Romania.

In the decisive match, the Serbian side triumphed convincingly 21:14 over Berlin’s Spandau 04, by quarters 6:6, 7:3, 5:3 and 3:2. After an even first quarter, Novi Beograd upped the tempo and gave the Germans no chance of a comeback in the second half.

This was Novi Beograd’s second win of the tournament — in the first round, the team had beaten France’s Strasbourg 15:12. In the round’s other match, Oradea defeated Spandau on penalties 19:17.

The team now awaits the duel with hosts Oradea and the group-stage draw, which takes place on September 21. The top two teams of the tournament qualify for the TOP 16 stage.
