Novi Sad Prosecutor’s Office asks police to identify participants in last night’s brawl at the Futoška market
The Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Novi Sad today sent the Novi Sad Police a request to retrieve video footage from all surveillance cameras covering the site of Tuesday evening’s incident, when at around 22:00, at the intersection of Liberation Boulevard and Jevrejska Street, a brawl broke out between supporters of the Serbian Progressive Party and supporters of the Student List, as the Serbian newspaper Danas reports.
According to the prosecution, after a detailed review of the retrieved footage and the footage published on social networks, the police must determine the identity of the persons who took part in the brawl.
The Prosecutor’s Office announces that the criminal offence of “violent behaviour at a sporting event or public gathering” is suspected and emphasizes that “every form of violence will be legally sanctioned.”
The incidents at the Futoška market, as Danas writes, began when SNS activists came to provoke the gathered citizens who had unfurled banners reading “The students win.” The SNS candidate for the National Assembly, Vukašin Đoković, was the first to try to snatch the “The students win” flag from them; the progressives tried several times during the evening to take their banners, while at around 22:00 the biggest brawl between the two groups occurred.
