Nursing and ICT, the most sought-after programs at the University of Elbasan

Enrollments at the “Aleksandër Xhuvani” University continue with high interest for several study programs.

General Nursing, Physical Education and Sports, Information Technologies and Economic Informatics are among the most sought-after fields by high-school graduates.

“Student preferences and the most sought-after programs remain General Nursing, Physical Education and Sports, Information Technologies and Economic Informatics. Undoubtedly, there is also interest in the two-year programs, which continue to be a very good orientation for students who want a practice-oriented education that guides them faster into the labor market,” said Elvira Fetahu, Rector of “Aleksandër Xhuvani” University.

The two-year programs have also seen high interest and filled their quotas already in the first enrollment phase. According to the rector, no study program risks closing this year, while the process continues in two phases and the second phase begins this Thursday.

The situation is different for teacher-training programs, where the rector notes a continuous decline in preferences in this round as well. According to her, young people are increasingly orienting toward medicine, engineering and economics.

“It is true that even at the close of this round, as has been the trend in recent years, there are fewer preferences for teacher-training programs compared to other programs. We view this with concern, because the teacher is one of the most important professions for the country’s development. The university should not respond to this simply as a challenge to increase numbers and applicants; we must change too. The university launched this year the First Summer School of the Diaspora, an important initiative in cooperation with UBT in Prishtina,” the rector added.

Faced with changing preferences among high-school graduates, the University of Elbasan says it is adapting its academic offering. The institution has expanded cooperation with international universities and is bringing innovation to its study programs.

The aim, according to the university’s leadership, is for the programs to be more closely linked to labor market needs and for students to have more opportunities for employment after completing their studies.
