Official US trailer for Sandra Hüller’s “Rose”: Austria’s Oscar 2027 entry hits US cinemas December 11
Mubi has unveiled the official US trailer for “Rose”, the historical drama by Austrian director Markus Schleinzer starring Sandra Hüller in the lead role, FirstShowing announced on September 28. The black-and-white film is Austria’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards (2027).
Set in early 17th-century Germany amid the Thirty Years’ War, the story follows a mysterious soldier who appears in an isolated Protestant village and is declared heir to an abandoned farm — a deliberate deception, because the “soldier” is in fact a woman, Rose, who has built an entire life presenting herself as a man. The screenplay was written by Schleinzer together with Alexander Brom, and the cast also includes Caro Braun, Marisa Growaldt, Robert Gwisdek, Godehard Giese and Augustino Renken.
The film had its world premiere in competition at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, where Hüller won the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance. It then traveled to Telluride — where it received the Silver Medallion — and to the New York Film Festival, while it has already opened in German cinemas since April. Mubi is releasing it in US cinemas on December 11, with a clear awards-season campaign. International critics call it one of the German actress’s strongest performances of the year, the actress once nominated for an Oscar for “Anatomy of a Fall”.
For Schleinzer, the author of “Michael” and “Angelo”, this is a return to his favorite themes: identity, autonomy and the social structures that try to confine his characters. For Hüller it continues an exceptionally busy year: after a supporting role in “Project Hail Mary” alongside Ryan Gosling, she is also awaited in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s “Digger” with Tom Cruise and in “Fatherland”.
