Ohrid farmers fear autumn floods: unmaintained canals and uncleared riverbeds
With the arrival of autumn rainfall, fear is growing among local farmers in the Ohrid region.
The unmaintained network of canals and the uncleared riverbeds pose, every year, a direct risk of flooding fields and destroying agricultural production, reports 24 Vesti.
As soon as the first heavy autumn rains fall, water overflows from the blocked beds and floods farmland, damaging crops — a scenario that, according to farmers, repeats year after year.
Farmers are demanding timely intervention from institutions: clearing riverbeds and maintaining the canal network before autumn rains cause irreparable damage to production.
