Olympiacos escape from Kaunas: Fournier the hero with 19 points in 93-91 win over Zalgiris
What a game in Kaunas! As tostoixima.gr reports, Olympiacos stayed standing in a real thriller at the “Zalgirio Arena” and beat Zalgiris 93-91, celebrating their second straight “double” in the EuroLeague.
The “Pirates” had to manage a game decided by details, with the Lithuanians repeatedly coming back and the lead changing hands in the final minutes. But Olympiacos found the answers when the ball was “burning” — and that is where Evan Fournier appeared.
As tostoixima.gr writes, the French star took matters into his own hands in the final period and, with two giant three-pointers in the last 1.5 minutes, gave Olympiacos the lead, sealing a big win. Fournier finished the game with 19 points.
Sasha Vezenkov also made a decisive contribution with 18 points and 8 rebounds, while Jean Montero added 15 points and 7 assists off the bench.
Zalgiris had taken an 88-87 lead shortly before the end, but Fournier answered with a three-pointer for 88-90, Montero gave Olympiacos four points of “air” with two free throws, before Sterling Brown cut it to 91-92. Fournier went to the free-throw line, made one, and Olympiacos held the lead until the end. Quarters: 24-21, 44-44, 63-64, 91-93.
With this result, Olympiacos climb to 2-0 in the EuroLeague, after their convincing 106-89 opening win over Baskonia. It was Olympiacos’ 10th win over Zalgiris in their last 11 meetings. In the stands was also the legend Shaquille O’Neal, who lived the game intensely. For Zalgiris, the top scorer was Sterling Brown with 20 points.
