On October 8 the new territorial map goes to the vote / Majority faces PD opposition, here’s what is expected to happen
If magistrates’ salaries are already a closed chapter for the Socialists, another one reopens on Monday.
The Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs begins work on reviewing the administrative-territorial division, according to the variant proposed by the Socialists.
The majority’s draft was deposited in Parliament on July 31, to allow time for consultation with local units, where in recent weeks Edi Rama himself went to meet citizens.
From committee to plenary session, nearly 3 calendar weeks are planned, with Thursday, October 8 set as the day when the Socialists will once again be tested on their compactness. This is because the initiative requires a minimum of 84 votes, and the reduction of municipalities from 61 to 46 has upset quite a few Socialists.
In the 15 municipalities losing their status as independent local self-government units and merging with neighboring municipalities, left and right councilors joined together to stop the new map in municipal councils, but without success.
This will be the second time that the Socialists in the Rama government approve an administrative-territorial division of the country, the first in 2014 and now in 2026, and what remains unchanged is the lack of consensus, with the opposition demanding a larger number of local units, 100 of them, while the Socialists want 46.
