Ottawa: Canada Weighs Visa-Free Movement for Its Citizens in the EU

Canadian citizens could gain the right to live and work in European Union countries without visas, under discussions for a new partnership between Canada and the EU, according to Reuters.

According to reports, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is considering the possibility of creating a special relationship with the European bloc, which could include easing the movement of citizens, goods and services.

New opportunities for employment and residence

Such an agreement would allow Canadian citizens to relocate more easily to countries like France, Germany, Italy and Spain, creating new opportunities for employment and professional development.

Discussions also include the movement of qualified workers in strategic sectors such as energy, artificial intelligence, defense and critical minerals.

This could strengthen economic ties and the labor market between Canada and Europe.

Special partnership, not EU membership

Prime Minister Carney has stated that Canada does not seek full membership in the European Union, but a “unique alliance” with the bloc.

Reports of a possible “associate member” status remain part of the discussions and do not represent an approved status at this time.

A new agreement would require negotiations and agreement from EU institutions and Canadian authorities.

Economic and strategic ties

The initiative comes at a time when Canada is seeking to diversify its trade and economic relations, while aiming to strengthen cooperation with European partners in energy, technology, defense and infrastructure.

If it were to materialize, the agreement on the free movement of Canadian workers would constitute an important step in relations between Canada and the European Union.
