Pashko Vasa, a Prominent Figure of the Literature and Political Thought of the National Revival

Born in Shkodër on September 17, 1825, Pashko Vasa was a distinguished figure of the Albanian National Revival, a poet, patriot and senior official.

Pashko Vasa was among the main organizers of the League of Prizren in 1878, a member of the Central Committee for the Defense of the Rights of the Albanian Nationality, established in Istanbul (1877), and one of the founders of the Society for the Publication of Albanian Writings in 1879.

Learned and self-taught, with a broad cultural formation and long experience in Ottoman administration and diplomacy, he built a successful career in Italy, London and Istanbul, placing his knowledge and experience at the service of the Albanian national cause.

In the Ottoman Empire, he received the title of “pasha” and, in 1883, was appointed Governor General of Lebanon, a duty he held until the end of his life.

In literature, Pashko Vasa left a precious legacy, with his best-known work remaining the poem “Moj Shqypni,” written around the 1880s. Together with the historical prose “Shqypnia dhe shqyptart” (1879), it constitutes one of the most important testimonies of his patriotic thought. “Moj Shqypni” became a rallying cry for the unity of Albanians and the strengthening of national consciousness.

Pashko Vasa passed away on June 29, 1892, in Beirut.
