Pope against AI-created art: It lacks the human spark

Critics of art created by Artificial Intelligence now have a powerful voice on their side: Pope Leo XIV.

Pope Leo XIV spoke about the spiritual distinction between art created by humans and that produced by machines, calling for the protection of human creativity in the face of the spread of AI.

“In the AI era, it has become urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce,” he said.

According to the Pope, there is a fundamental distinction between art and what a machine can create through statistical calculations, based on millions of images previously created by humans.

“Algorithms lack the human spark,” Pope Leo XIV emphasised.

In May, he had spoken more broadly about AI in a letter, where he underlined the importance of human dignity in an increasingly automated world, as Telegrafi reports.
