NBC News/Telemundo poll: Latino voters are turning away from Trump and the Republicans a month before the midterm elections
A new NBC News/Telemundo poll released on Sunday, October 4, shows that Latino voters are rapidly turning away from President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, just one month before November’s midterm elections.
According to the poll, Democrats lead Republicans by 24 percentage points — 59% to 35% — on the question of which party should control Congress, as USA Today reports, citing the poll results published today.
At the same point in 2024, the Democrats’ lead among Latino voters was only 12 percentage points (54% to 42%), according to NBC News measurements at the time — so the gap has doubled within two years.
President Trump’s approval among Latino voters has fallen to just 27%, while 69% disapprove of his performance, according to the poll. The main issue driving the shift is the cost of living: fully 78% of Latino voters say they disapprove of the way the president has handled the cost of living, against only 20% who support him.
One third of respondents (33%) rank inflation and the cost of living as the most important issue, while 52% place it among their top two issues — making it the leading concern in this poll.
Around two thirds of Latino voters think that Trump’s immigration enforcement measures have gone too far; only 9% say they have not gone far enough and 22% support his approach. Interestingly, immigration ranks only as the sixth most important issue — behind the cost of living, government corruption, threats to democracy, the economy and the war with Iran.
The context nevertheless shows that the Democrats have not yet erased all the gains the Republicans have made among Latino voters in recent years: the current 24-point lead, although double that before the 2024 elections, remains far from the 43-point lead the Democrats held in NBC News polls before the 2018 midterm elections.
The poll was conducted among 800 registered Latino voters in the period September 21–28, with a margin of error of ±3.5 percentage points. The midterm elections are held on November 3.
