Protests against The Hague verdict on Thaçi spread to the diaspora: rally outside UN headquarters in New York on September 22
Thousands of citizens gathered for the fourth night in a row at “Skënderbeu” Square in Pristina, continuing the protests against the first-instance verdict of the Hague Specialist Chambers against Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi. The gathering began with the KLA oath repeated in chorus by those present.
One of the organizers, Çlirim Haziri, declared: “It wasn’t the party that united us – the KLA united us,” stressing that the protests would not stop until, in his words, “justice for the liberators” is achieved.
The protest started at 9:00 PM after repeated calls from the “Liria ka emër” (Freedom Has a Name) platform, and thousands returned to the square despite the rain. The motto remains “Not in my name,” in reaction to Judge Charles Smith’s opening words on September 16.
The key new development: the protests are spreading beyond Pristina — gatherings have been held or announced in other parts of Kosovo, in Switzerland, Germany and Canada, while a protest outside the UN headquarters in New York has been announced for September 22.
