Robert Eggers’ ‘Werwulf’ drops full trailer: werewolf horror lands on September’s full moon — in theaters December 25

Director Robert Eggers released today, September 26, 2026, the full trailer of his newest horror film, «Werwulf», as SuperHeroHype reports. Just like the first trailer, which came out on a full-moon night in June, this one was also deliberately released at the peak of September’s full moon — a conscious move that Eggers ties directly to the film’s mythology.

«Werwulf» is a folk-Gothic horror with a screenplay by Eggers and Icelandic writer Sjón. The film follows a mute 14th-century villager who is cursed to transform into a wolf whenever the moon is full. The lead role is played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, while the trailer also shows chilling footage of Lily-Rose Depp and Willem Dafoe — both Eggers collaborators on the critically acclaimed «Nosferatu» — as well as Ralph Ineson and others. The official synopsis describes the film as «Robert Eggers’ most visceral and haunting experience to date… a harrowing story of devotion, curse and the devil within us».

In an interview with Empire in June 2026, Eggers explained why he syncs his trailers to the full moon. The association of werewolves with the moon, he said, «started customarily in cinema», but he found a very old English text — older than the period in which the film is set — stating that werewolves are influenced by the moon’s cycle, alongside references in Icelandic literature.

The film’s team includes executive producers Chris Columbus, Eleanor Columbus and Bernard Bellew. «Werwulf» is expected to hit theaters on December 25, 2026.
