Rrahmani: Backing the statement on the Special Court but not the law is political hypocrisy

Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) MP Eman Rrahmani has said that supporting the Assembly’s joint statement on the Special Court’s guilty verdict without also supporting the law aimed at addressing potential injustices makes no sense.

Rrahmani made the remarks during a conversation on RTV Dukagjini’s “Five” show, where the adoption of Kosovo’s Assembly joint statement was discussed, 12 days after the verdict against the former KLA leaders in The Hague.

He thanked the MPs who backed the statement but stressed that it has no legal effect on the judicial process.

“I thank all the MPs who supported a joint statement. This statement has no legal effect on the process; it is simply a joint declaration about everything that happened,” Rrahmani said.

He added that the session was delayed due to disagreements between political parties, warning that there may also be different political positionings on the next steps.

The PDK MP stressed that supporting the statement while opposing the proposed law on the Special Court would, in his view, amount to political hypocrisy.

“Supporting this statement and not supporting the law tomorrow makes no sense. That amounts to political hypocrisy. Because the only process through which we, as the Assembly and as MPs, can help restore the justice owed to the Albanian people and the KLA is by voting for the law that will serve as a guarantee for correcting injustices that may occur at the second instance,” Rrahmani said.

In this context, he called on the Government to provide a legal opinion on the matter.

Rrahmani argued that the Government can give its legal assessment, while decisions on laws belong to the Assembly.

He stressed that, in his view, the Government has no competence to amend or supplement the submitted law, but can give its opinion before the Assembly decides on it.
