Rubio holds closed-door meeting with Lavrov at UN — here’s what they discussed

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met on Wednesday in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

The talks began without any opening statements to the media and continued behind closed doors. Lavrov and Rubio last met exactly two months earlier, on July 22, on the sidelines of ASEAN-related meetings in Manila.

The talks were expected to cover bilateral relations as well as efforts to end the war in Ukraine, following U.S. President Donald Trump’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

After his meeting with Trump on Tuesday, Zelenskyy said Ukraine was ready for an energy ceasefire.

“We are ready for an energy ceasefire if the Russians do not attack our energy infrastructure,” he said.
