Russia launches day-long air assault on Kyiv, two killed

Russian armed forces bombarded Kyiv from early Wednesday morning with various types of drones, killing at least two people and injuring 24 others, Ukrainian authorities said.

“The Russians launched many drones against the city, a considerable number of them jet-powered,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a statement.

“Russia continues to turn civilian and critical infrastructure into targets: pharmaceutical facilities, gas stations, railways, communications infrastructure and shopping centers. There were also strikes in cities and communities in eight regions,” Zelenskyy added.

As world leaders, including Zelenskyy, gathered in New York for the annual UN General Assembly, residents in Kyiv endured continuous strikes throughout the morning. Large parts of the city were covered in smoke. Russian attacks destroyed Kyiv’s modernist railway market near the central station and damaged a major pharmaceutical factory. The attacks continued throughout the day.

In New York, the Ukrainian team has worked to secure continued support for its resistance and to put pressure on Moscow. U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday called on Russian leader Vladimir Putin to “resolve the war.”

The Kremlin sees no reason to enter peace talks at this stage, spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday, but added that Russia is always open to negotiations.
