Russia urges Iran to remain in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty
Russia has urged Iran to remain a signatory of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and not to withdraw from the global nuclear agreement, as Al Jazeera reports.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow does not want Tehran to leave the treaty, under which Iran is committed not to develop or acquire nuclear weapons. The remarks came in response to comments by Iranian officials about a possible withdrawal from the agreement.
Russia and Iran maintain close ties through a strategic cooperation treaty, and Moscow has been among Tehran’s diplomatic backers during the seven-month war with the United States and Israel.
The nuclear question remains central to any effort to end the conflict. Washington has demanded that any peace deal include verifiable limits on Iran’s nuclear programme, while Tehran insists it is not pursuing nuclear weapons and claims the right to civilian nuclear capacity.
