Russian missile and drone attack hits power plants, 4 killed — Kyiv under smoke
The overnight Russian attack hit power plants and left the Ukrainian capital under a layer of smoke on Wednesday, with four killed reported so far, as the Reuters agency reports.
During the attack, according to Ukrainian officials, Russia launched 188 drones together with ballistic and anti-ship missiles — five missiles and 155 drones were shot down, but the damage was considerable.
DTEK, the energy operator, announced that it has restored power to 8,000 families in the capital.
The Mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, confirmed that four people were killed by the attack — two women and a 14-year-old child lost their lives overnight, while another person was killed on Wednesday at a warehouse in the capital. He also said that debris was found at a Western embassy in central Kyiv, without giving further details.
The attack crossed Ukraine’s borders: a drone exploded near the village of Hirbovet in Moldova, while Romania and Poland scrambled military aircraft as a precaution. Flights were temporarily suspended at the Polish airports of Lublin and Rzeszow.
Russia claims it hit a data centre in Kyiv, power plants in the Kyiv region, an industrial complex in Odesa and the infrastructure of the Izmail port, but independents have not been able to fully verify these claims, Reuters reports.
