Sammer criticises the national team: We have become cowards, we must not copy Spain!

During an event organised by “Sky Sport” at the “Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten” in Munich, attended by personalities such as Matthias Sammer (sports adviser at BVB), Manuel Baum (Augsburg coach) and Joti Chatzialexiou (Nuremberg sporting director), several topics were addressed regarding the problems and projects of the German national football team.

In his remarks Matthias Sammer was quite critical when asked to analyse the situation. “We in Germany have a new tendency, so to speak: instead of becoming braver we are cowards. It has not been easy for us to find our former strength once again,” Sammer said.

According to him, Germany should have its own project focused on its own strengths and should not try to copy its rivals. “We should not look at what other teams do. The best copy is never better than the original. I look forward to Per Mertesacker taking up the post of sporting director at the German Football Federation, because I think he will be the one to set the standard that must be followed,” the 59-year-old said.
