Serbia Commissions “Čibuk 2” Wind Farm: Power for Nearly 200,000 Households

Masdar and Taaleri Energia have today commissioned the “Čibuk 2” wind farm with a capacity of 154 megawatts in South Banat, about 40 kilometers from Belgrade. Together with the existing “Čibuk 1” (158 MW), the two projects form the largest wind energy hub in Serbia and the Western Balkans, with a total capacity of 312 MW.

“Čibuk 2” consists of 22 Nordex turbines, and its expected annual production reaches up to 336,000 MWh of electricity — enough to supply around 80,000 households and avoid around 311,200 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year. Together, the two parks can produce energy for around 178,800 households.

The total foreign direct investment in both projects exceeds 500 million euros. During the construction of “Čibuk 2”, more than 1,000 people were engaged, including workers, subcontractors and project management, mostly from South Banat. The park is owned 50-50 by Masdar and Taaleri Energia and was developed in partnership with New Energy Solutions.

Serbia’s Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Đedović Handanović, praised the completion of “Čibuk 2” as a significant contribution to decarbonizing Serbia’s energy system and increasing energy independence. According to her, Masdar’s two wind farms in Serbia, with 312 MW in total, currently account for around 25 percent of the country’s total wind and solar capacity.

Masdar currently has a development portfolio in Serbia of over 200 MW, including solar plants, wind farms and battery energy storage systems. The company aims for around 3.5 GW of new wind and solar capacity to be built by 2030, with renewables expected to account for 45 percent of electricity production. Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi called the launch of “Čibuk 2” a key milestone for the company’s presence in Serbia and a platform for further growth in Central and Eastern Europe.
