“Shrek” becomes the first animated film on Cosm’s giant LED domes as Universal announces multi-year “Shared Reality” partnership
Universal Film and immersive media company Cosm announced Thursday a multi-year, multi-film partnership for “Shared Reality” experiences, launching with “Shrek” — the first animated film to debut on Cosm’s LED domes. The project, developed with DreamWorks Animation and visual effects studio Reel FX, will show the 2001 film in a whole new form: audiences will “step inside” the world of the original film.
According to the companies, viewers will be able to explore legendary locations like Shrek’s swamp, Duloc Arena, the Kingdom of Far Far Away and Dragon’s Castle, while experiencing the adventure alongside Shrek, Donkey, Princess Fiona and other beloved characters. The film will keep its traditional 16:9 format, but the LED dome around it will come alive throughout the screening with responsive digital environments.
“‘Shrek’ is an iconic franchise that continues to find new ways to surprise and delight audiences,” said David O’Connor, chief brand officer at Universal Entertainment. “With Cosm, we’re pushing the boundaries of how fans can experience this beloved story beyond the screen, with an interactive journey into the world of Shrek.” Alexis Scalice, vice president and head of Cosm Studios, called it Cosm’s first animated film, noting the format will amplify the humor and irresistible spirit of the original, 25 years after its debut.
This is the second major studio partnership for Cosm’s dome technology, following the Warner Bros. deal that brought “Shared Reality” screenings of “The Matrix,” “IT,” “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” and “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” This summer, Sony Pictures took a minority stake in the company. Tickets for “Shrek” on Cosm domes — in Los Angeles (Inglewood), Dallas, Atlanta and Detroit — go on sale this fall; a new location is planned in Cleveland next year.
The news comes ahead of the franchise’s cinematic return: “Shrek 5,” with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and Zendaya, hits theaters on June 30, 2027.
