Sick? This is the only drink doctors recommend drinking more of

When you’re lying in bed with a fever, a runny nose or an upset stomach, the last thing on your mind is probably what to drink. Yet hydration plays an important role while the body tries to fight off an infection — and according to doctors, there’s no need to search for any “magic” drink. Two specialists asked about the issue agree on the same answer: water is the best choice when you’re sick.

Whether it’s a cold, the flu, allergies or another infection, the body can lose more fluids, especially with fever, sweating, vomiting or diarrhea. That makes hydration even more important.

Why is water so important when you’re sick? According to Dr. Mariam Zakhary, dehydration can negatively affect recovery. When the body doesn’t get enough fluids, mucus can thicken and blood circulation can be impaired, making it harder to transport oxygen, electrolytes and immune cells where they’re needed. Dr. Matthew Heller also notes that the need for water can increase during illness, especially when the body loses fluids through sweating, vomiting or diarrhea.

It helps the immune system

Hydration isn’t just about preventing thirst. According to doctors, water supports the body’s normal functioning while the immune system fights the infection. Studies cited by experts suggest that dehydration can raise cortisol levels, which can affect immune system function. Limiting water intake has also been linked to changes in gut microbiota and a lower count of certain immune cells.

It helps regulate temperature

When you have a fever, the body loses more fluids, and water helps replace them. Hydration also supports lymphatic circulation, which is important for transporting immune cells. Water helps the kidneys eliminate waste and inflammatory byproducts from the body, while sufficient hydration can help maintain normal body function during illness.

It can also prevent other symptoms

When you’re sick, you don’t need to deal with the consequences of dehydration too. Drinking enough water helps keep the colon hydrated and can help prevent constipation. According to doctors, hydration also helps keep muscles hydrated, lowering the risk of cramps, and supports normal kidney function.

Your mood can benefit too

A glass of water can help you feel better mentally as well. Even mild dehydration can affect concentration, alertness, short-term memory and mood. So when you’re sick, keeping a bottle or glass of water nearby may be one of the simplest things you can do to give your body the support it needs.

What if water doesn’t appeal to you when you’re sick? If you have a sore throat, you can add a little lemon and honey to the water to make it easier to drink. For nausea, a few slices of cucumber or a bit of ginger can make water more tolerable. If you have a cold, some people may prefer lukewarm water, while with stomach issues, cool water may be easier to drink. In any case, the practical advice is to take small, frequent sips rather than drinking a large amount at once — especially if your throat or stomach is sensitive.
