Sony confirms Alan Ritchson as the star of “Helldivers” and pushes the film to June 2028

Sony Pictures has officially confirmed Alan Ritchson as the lead of the film “Helldivers”, the cinematic adaptation of the popular action sci-fi game from PlayStation Studios, as ComingSoon reports, citing Deadline. Alongside the casting confirmation, the studio also moved the release date: the film, initially planned for 10 November 2027, will now open in cinemas on 9 June 2028.

The announcement was made at the Cinema United Fall Summit and came with updates for Sony Pictures’ entire upcoming slate, as Collider adds. In this reshuffle, Ridley Scott — who is also a producer of “Helldivers” — took the November 2027 slot for his film “Treasure Island”, directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Hugh Laurie, Shameik Moore, Andrew Garfield and Stephen Graham.

Ritchson, known mainly for the title role in Amazon’s hit series “Reacher”, will play the central character in the adaptation of the game developed by Arrowhead Game Studios, which became a phenomenon after its release in 2024. As MovieWeb reports, based on The Wrap, his casting was welcomed by fans of the game.

The project is directed by Justin Lin, the filmmaker behind several films in the “Fast & Furious” series, with a screenplay by Gary Dauberman, while the producers are Hutch Parker, Asad Qizilbash of PlayStation Productions and Lin’s own Perfect Storm Entertainment.

Beyond “Helldivers”, Sony also announced several other calendar moves: Michelle Yeoh’s “The Surgeon” will open on 2 April 2027, “Narcs” on 20 August 2027, “24 Jump Street” on 10 December 2027, while the Lego film “Grandgear” was moved to 14 January 2028.
