“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” returns to theaters with new scenes: Sony plans re-release of the $2.5 billion film with Rosario Dawson’s deleted scene

The extended edition of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” will return to theaters with additional scenes, according to an exclusive Deadline report, also confirmed by Variety. The Destin Daniel Cretton-directed film, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, has become the highest-grossing film in U.S. box-office history — about $950.7 million in North America alone — and the third in the world with approximately $2.495 billion.

Among the additional scenes is — but not only — the deleted scene of nurse Claire Temple, played by Rosario Dawson. The actress herself revealed last month at the GalaxyCon convention in Raleigh that she had shot a scene for the new Spider-Man film, but it was cut from the final edit: “I shot a scene in the new Spider-Man movie, but it was cut.”

Claire Temple is the character Dawson played in the Marvel Netflix series — “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage,” “Iron Fist” and “The Defenders.” Her return, even through a deleted scene, opens doors to new connections with the Marvel universe. According to Variety, “there are more surprises in the additional scenes,” so the extended edition may also contain other unreleased footage.

The re-release follows in the footsteps of “Avengers: Endgame Encore,” which grossed $86 million globally in a single re-release weekend, as part of the marketing campaign for “Avengers: Doomsday,” expected in December. There is also a similar precedent at Sony itself: “Spider-Man: No Way Home” was re-released with additional scenes for Labor Day weekend in 2022. The re-release date for “Brand New Day” has not yet been announced.

Meanwhile, “Brand New Day” is still playing in theaters, while its digital release on October 6 — which we have written about separately — is a separate development from this theatrical re-release.
