State housing in instalments of up to 30 years: who becomes an owner and who stays only a tenant
The proposed amendments to the Housing Law in North Macedonia provide for new rules for state housing, as Racini reports. Household income will determine whether long-term users of state housing will be able to become their owners or will continue to pay rent.
According to Racini’s reporting, beneficiaries of social assistance or permanent cash assistance will not be able to buy the home they live in: for them, only renting is provided for. The change aims for state housing to be dedicated to those who really need shelter.
Also according to Racini, the proposal provides that state housing can be bought in instalments of up to 30 years, with interest of 4 per cent, making ownership more accessible for families with limited incomes.
The document also provides protective measures, as Racini writes: citizens will not be able to do business with state housing, and reselling it at a higher price will not be allowed.
