Strategic Kahbub Mountains Remain Under Yemeni Government Control
The Kahbub Mountains, a strategic position near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait overlooking Mayyun Island, remain under the control of Saudi-backed government forces fighting the Houthis in Yemen, Al Jazeera correspondent Maha Ali reported from Taiz.
Since the Houthis entered the city of Mokha, took control of the port and then moved toward the strategic Mayyun Island, they have attempted to advance into these mountains, which would allow the rebels to secure positions behind. Government forces have managed to push the Houthis out of large parts of these mountains.
The situation on the Mokha front is calm, but Kahbub is now the main battlefield and may remain so in the coming days, given the mountain’s strategic importance and the view it offers over Mayyun Island.
The Houthis captured the strategic port city of Mokha on September 10 and Mayyun Island, in the heart of the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, on September 11. Since then, fighting has intensified along Yemen’s western coast, while government forces, with Saudi air support, try to retake the lost ground.
