Supertanker hit and burning in the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian media report
The ship, carrying 2.5 million barrels of oil and, according to Tehran, sailing “illegally” through the strait, was hit about eight kilometers off the coast of Oman and is burning — the authorship of the attack is still unclear.
A supertanker has been hit in the Strait of Hormuz and is burning, Iran’s Fars news agency announced on Thursday, citing local sources, as Al Jazeera reports. The ship, with a capacity of 2.5 million barrels, was sailing “illegally” through the strategic strait when it was hit about eight kilometers off the coast of Oman.
Iranian media did not immediately claim the author of the attack, nor did they disclose the flag under which the ship was sailing.
The incident comes at a time when the Strait of Hormuz remains the epicenter of the U.S.–Iran war, with maritime traffic reduced to historic levels and oil prices under constant pressure. About a fifth of the world’s oil passes through Hormuz.
The attack adds further uncertainty over the safety of navigation in the strait, only hours after the maritime intelligence firm Marisks reported strikes on three other tankers in the same area.
