The 2026 MLB playoff picture: standings and decisive races before the final games
The final day of the 2026 MLB regular season has brought a turbulent finale, with several decisions still open for the playoff spots. The Philadelphia Phillies still hold a one-game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks for the third wild-card spot, but Arizona holds the tiebreaker. The San Diego Padres have secured the top wild-card spot and will host the Chicago Cubs in a rematch of last year’s meeting. In the American League West Division, the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers are tied at the top, with the Astros holding the tiebreaker; the division winner could go down in history as the first team to win the title with a losing record in a 162-game season.
According to Bleacher Report, in the American League Tampa Bay (98-63), Cleveland (85-76) and Houston (80-81) lead, while the wild-card race is led by the New York Yankees (93-68), Boston (87-74) and the Chicago White Sox (83-78). The Cleveland Guardians secured second place after a win and a White Sox loss; thus, the league’s final drama centers on the AL West. The Astros hold the tiebreaker, and if they beat the Oakland Athletics they will secure third place; Oakland is using a bullpen game starting with Brady Basso, and with the A’s weak bullpen, Houston is seen as the favorite to secure qualification.
In the National League, Milwaukee (102-59), the Los Angeles Dodgers (99-62) and Atlanta (94-67) lead, while the wild-card queue is San Diego (90-71), the Chicago Cubs (88-73), Philadelphia (87-74) and Arizona (86-75). The Padres’ win closed out the top wild-card spot and created a possible clash between the Phillies and Diamondbacks for the third wild-card spot. Philadelphia has suffered four straight losses scoring only three runs in total; with one home game and Zack Wheeler on the mound, the Phillies will seek a win over Tampa Bay to qualify.
As Bleacher Report reports, the outcomes of these final games will determine which teams enter the play-offs and in what positions, while the AL West epilogue could register a historic record for a division champion with a non-winning record in the 162-game season.
