The Art of Albanian Icons: A Special Evening of Discussions at the Louvre

At the Louvre Museum, one of the greatest temples of world culture, a special evening was dedicated to Albanian heritage, through a conference on cultural and scientific cooperation between Albania and France.

The exhibition “Icons of Albania, Treasures of the National Museum of Medieval Art of Korçë,” currently on display at the Museum of Fine Arts of Chambéry, became the starting point for an important discussion on heritage, scientific research and cultural ties between the two countries.

Under the meaningful title “When International Diplomacy Inspires Scientific Research,” Nicolas Bousquet, director of the museums of Chambéry, told the story of this exhibition, born from the twinning between Korçë and Chambéry and from close cooperation with the National Museum of Medieval Art of Korçë.

Maximilien Durand, a distinguished specialist and director of the Department of Byzantine and Eastern Christian Arts at the Louvre Museum, offered the public an extraordinary journey through the history of Byzantine and post-Byzantine painting in Albania, illuminating the artistic richness of the works on display and the new scientific perspectives that their study has opened in cooperation with Albanian specialists.

The fact that this heritage was presented precisely at the Louvre Museum gives this evening a special meaning. In one of the world’s most prestigious art institutions, Albanian history and art became part of a broader European dialogue on culture, knowledge and shared heritage.

Present at this meeting, Albania’s ambassador Dritan Tola expressed the honor and emotion that Albanian heritage is valued and promoted in this way at the Louvre Museum, warmly greeting the two speakers:

“When diplomacy creates bridges between institutions and peoples, it also becomes a source of inspiration for scientific research, knowledge and the rediscovery of our shared European heritage,” Ambassador Tola said.

The National Museum of Medieval Art expressed thanks to Maximilien Durand and Nicolas Bousquet for their extraordinary passion and work, as well as to Françoise Mardrus, Director of Museum Studies at the Louvre Museum, for hosting this beautiful stage of a cultural adventure that links Albania, France and Europe.
