‘The Flood’: Jennifer Lawrence joins Zach Cregger in the sci-fi thriller — premiere on August 11, 2028

Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence will play the leading role in ‘The Flood’, the new sci-fi thriller written and directed by Zach Cregger, the director of Barbarian, Weapons and the new Resident Evil, as ComingSoon.net reports, referring to a Deadline exclusive.

The film is produced by Warner Bros./New Line Cinema, with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment producing, and is scheduled for a cinema release on August 11, 2028. Also producing are Roy Lee’s Vertigo and Miri Yoon, with whom Cregger worked on Weapons.

Plot details remain shrouded in mystery, but Cregger himself has hinted that the story is set in space and that the idea was born of his desire to work with Spielberg: during a very narrow window of time to pitch an idea, he and his wife, actress Sara Paxton, watched Ad Astra, and her fear of being trapped in space led the director toward a ‘stranger and scarier’ premise, as Thought Catalog recounts.

In a Reddit Q&A session, Cregger explained that The Flood ‘is not as horror-focused as the other films (although it may be the most unsettling)’ and described its structure as ‘structurally strange’, in the vein of Barbarian and Weapons. ‘Jennifer is one of a kind, and I can’t wait to see her in this role,’ Cregger said.

The news comes immediately after the success of Cregger’s Resident Evil, which opened with $60 million — a franchise record — and the director has chosen The Flood to direct before the Weapons prequel Gladys, which he will produce.
