The musical ‘The Karate Kid’ opens in Toronto: the original Ralph Macchio surprises the audience
The North American opening night of The Karate Kid – The Musical in Toronto held a real surprise for the audience: Ralph Macchio, the actor who played Daniel LaRusso in the original 1984 film, appeared unexpectedly on stage during the curtain call, as BroadwayWorld reports. The Canadian premiere took place on October 1, 2026 at the Princess of Wales Theatre.
Macchio was announced by Robert Mark Kamen, the film’s original screenwriter and the author of the musical’s book, who was also in the hall. According to BroadwayWorld, the martial-arts legend personally greeted Gino Ochello, the young performer making his professional stage debut precisely in the role of Daniel LaRusso in this production.
The musical is based on Columbia Pictures’ famous 1984 film, with a book by Kamen and music and lyrics by Drew Gasparini. Adrian Pang plays Mr. Miyagi, while Ochello is joined by Abigail Amin, Joe Simmons, Matt Mills, Sharon Sexton and Finley Oliver.
The production is directed by Amon Miyamoto, the choreography belongs to the duo Keone and Mari Madrid, the stage design is by Derek McLane, while the original score is played live by an orchestra. The story follows Daniel, the young boy who becomes a target of rivals until he finds guidance in Mr. Miyagi — the master who teaches him that true strength comes from balance and respect.
