“The One About Matthew Perry”: Netflix releases the first trailer for the documentary about the “Friends” star — premiering October 27

Netflix has released the first trailer for the docuseries “The One About Matthew Perry”, the three-part documentary dedicated to the life of “Friends” star Matthew Perry. As People reports, the series — directed by Emmy winner Mary Robertson, known for “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV” — is described by Maxine Productions as “the first in-depth, definitive documentary about the beloved Friends star, told by some of the people who knew him best”.

The premiere is set for October 27, 2026 on Netflix, just one day before the third anniversary of the actor’s death; he passed away on October 28, 2023. The trailer opens with Perry himself in an old interview: “I was extremely happy when I became famous. Then I said: ‘Uh-oh, this didn’t fix what was inside me'”, and further: “I said: ‘God, do whatever you want with me, just make me famous’… But God did not forget the rest”.

The documentary brings the first interview by his sister, Mia Perry Bowick, since the actor’s death. She says her brother “spoke about that feeling of emptiness or loneliness that he could never fill” and that he spent around $7 million trying to recover from addiction. Perry, who was open about his battle with addiction and had said he had been to rehab 15 times, died at age 54 from the acute effects of ketamine; the death was ruled an accident, with drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine as contributing factors.

Also speaking in the trailer are his early friends Roger Castillo and David Pressman, colleagues from “The Whole Nine Yards” and “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip”, as well as two friends from rehab, among them Terry Harrington. Reactions from “Friends” fans were immediate and emotional — “This is going to destroy me”, “heartbreaking” — and, as NME notes, the series is expected to be difficult to watch, given Perry’s role as Chandler Bing in a show that remains a source of comfort for generations.

The series’ name is a play on the “Friends” episode titles (“The One Where…”). Directed by Mary Robertson and premiering October 27 on Netflix, “The One About Matthew Perry” promises to be the most intimate account of the life of one of television’s most beloved actors.
