Thessaloniki: Prosecutor orders investigation into illegal chemotherapy clinic — officials who failed to shut it down face questioning

Thessaloniki Appeals Prosecutor Leonidas Nikolopoulos today ordered an expedited preliminary investigation into the scandal of the private clinic that was operating with an unlicensed oncology unit, as thitanews.gr reports, citing the broadcast of the Greek public television ERT.

The order was sent to the Thessaloniki First Instance Court Prosecutor’s Office and focuses on the inspections that had been carried out at the clinic and how their results were documented.

As part of the investigation, the representative of the National Transparency Authority (EAD), which uncovered the violations, will be called to testify. But the investigation goes further, as ikoinonia.gr writes: the members of the Central Macedonia Region’s Private Clinics Inspection Committee who took part in the extraordinary 2025 inspection will give explanations as suspects, without oath. They will have to explain why they did not record the existence of a fully equipped oncology unit, operating without a license and without the required infrastructure.

The region’s director of Public Health and Social Welfare will also be questioned as a suspect and will have to argue why the clinic was not permanently closed, although the committee had recommended closure in early 2026 and its operating certificate had been revoked.

The investigation will also examine the clinic’s operating charter for the period under investigation. Explanations will also be given by the clinic’s operations manager and the private pulmonologist under whose supervision the illegal oncology unit operated.
