Toshkovski: “Safe City” goes live on October 12 in Ohrid, Struga, Kërçovë and Dibër as well
North Macedonia’s Interior Minister, Pançe Toshkovski, during his visit to the Ohrid Regional Directorate of Internal Affairs (SHRV) and the Regional Center for Western Border Affairs, announced that the intelligent traffic surveillance system “Safe City” (Bezbeden grad) will begin practical implementation from October 12 in the SHRV Ohrid territory — in Ohrid, Struga, Kërçovë and Dibër.
According to the minister, preparations are in the final phase: the command center is being completed and everything is expected to be ready by October 12. Unlike previous phases, this time there will be no trial period — the system will be fully operational from day one and will record traffic violations, including speeding, running red lights and irregular license plates.
The “Safe City” system has been operating since February 1, 2026, initially in Skopje, Kumanovo, Tetovo and parts of corridors 8 and 10. Toshkovski highlighted its positive effects, announcing that in the first eight months of this year the number of traffic fatalities fell by 34 compared to the same period last year.
The minister also announced that an agreement has been reached with the European Union for FRONTEX to be present, in addition to the southern border, on North Macedonia’s western border as well, with joint activities expected to start by the end of this year.
During the visit, Toshkovski also noted the state of infrastructure: the main building of SHRV Ohrid is outdated and its demolition is planned, while services will move to a new facility on the grounds of the former barracks in Ohrid.
