‘Toy Story 5’ breaks the record on Disney+: 20 million views in five days
Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 5” has broken the viewership record on Disney+, drawing 20 million views in only the first five days of streaming, as TheWrap reports. The film arrived on the platform on 23 September — 96 days after its theatrical premiere on 19 June — and ranked as the number 1 title on Disney+ during premiere week, entering the top 10 biggest theatrical film premieres in the platform’s history.
The streaming success follows an extraordinary theatrical triumph: “Toy Story 5” closed its cinema run with around 1.14 billion dollars in global revenue — an absolute record for the franchise. The opening weekend brought 159.7 million dollars in North America and 310.2 million dollars worldwide: the biggest openings in the history of the franchise and of Pixar itself.
The Disney+ figures put the film clearly ahead of its predecessors: “Lilo & Stitch” had gathered 14.3 million views in its first five days, while “The Devil Wears Prada 2” reached 15.2 million on Disney+ and Hulu, according to TheWrap. Meanwhile, “Toy Story” remains the most-watched film franchise on Disney+, with over 2 billion hours streamed in total — and “Toy Story 5” alone contributed 168 million hours since the trailer’s release.
The film, directed by Andrew Stanton (co-director Kenna Harris), brings back the voices of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack, alongside Conan O’Brien, Scarlett Spears, Greta Lee, Shelby Rabara, Mykal-Michelle Harris and Craig Robinson. This time, Woody, Buzz Lightyear and Jessie face an unusual challenge: Lilypad, the new tablet entering Bonnie’s life with its own ideas about how to play.
