Trump campaigns in Ohio today: Republicans defend narrow Senate seat in Husted–Brown race
President Donald Trump will campaign on Saturday in Ohio, where the Republican Party is in a tight race for a U.S. Senate seat as it seeks to preserve its slim majority in Congress, as Reuters reports.
Republican Senator Jon Husted faces a tough challenge in Ohio from Democrat Sherrod Brown and hopes the president’s presence will give his base a boost, motivating Trump supporters who might otherwise skip the midterm elections.
Although Trump won over 55 percent of the vote in Ohio in the 2024 presidential election, economic concerns have come to the fore since then. Fuel prices in Ohio have risen 35 percent over the past year, averaging $4.16 a gallon, according to AAA, while Canadian retaliatory tariffs are hitting around $3 billion of Ohio exports.
The rally is being held at Butler High School in Vandalia, a suburb of Dayton. According to the Republican National Committee, the event starts at 17:30 and Trump is expected to take the stage at around 19:00.
Trump has promised 32 days of campaigning before the midterm elections; this week he has appeared in deeply conservative areas such as north Texas, Oklahoma and Alabama. “Everyone thinks prices are high because of me, but they’re not,” Trump told workers at a truck plant in Texas on Thursday.
Ohio is one of eight competitive Senate races in these midterms. Outside political groups have poured tens of millions of dollars into the campaign, turning the Husted–Brown contest into the second most expensive Senate race in the country, according to Federal Election Commission data.
