Trump: Iran conflict to end ‘very soon’ — oil prices fall sharply

U.S. President Donald Trump has said the conflict with Iran will end “very soon,” remarks that caused an immediate drop in oil prices. As Al Jazeera reports, Trump made the comments during a speech in Washington, where he was unveiling a new federal platform based on artificial intelligence.
“Iran is failing very badly,” the U.S. president said, repeating his claim that the country “will not have nuclear weapons.” “This will end very soon,” he said, referring to the conflict with Iran. “They will not have nuclear weapons, and oil prices will go down again, as they were before I had to take that little excursion to the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
The remarks come at a moment when diplomacy to end the seven-month war is intensifying: Qatar is mediating between Washington and Tehran over the Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days, while Trump has dismissed reports that he offered Tehran sanctions relief.
Iran has consistently denied seeking to develop nuclear weapons, but argues it has the right to nuclear capacity for peaceful purposes — the issue remains the key point on which the sides still differ in the indirect talks.
