Trump on Christa Pike’s botched execution: ‘It shouldn’t be very hard’

U.S. President Donald Trump commented for the first time on Christa Pike’s botched execution in Tennessee, saying a lethal-injection execution “shouldn’t be very hard”, as USA Today reports.

Trump was asked by a reporter during a trip on October 1 to Denton, Texas, whether he plans changes to the death penalty after Pike’s unsuccessful execution; she survived a lethal injection given as punishment for a murder committed 31 years ago.

“Well, that was an interesting situation, but you’ll have to talk to Tennessee about that, whether they’ll proceed or not,” Trump said after landing in Texas aboard Air Force One, according to USA Today.

The president then turned to Congressman Ronny Jackson, the former White House physician who was part of the travelling group: “Do you know what this is about? An execution where the drug didn’t quite work… How does that happen?” Jackson replied: “I don’t know how it happens. It should be easy to do.” “It shouldn’t be very hard,” Trump told him.

Pike’s lawyer, Randy Spivey, told reporters his client is alive but in critical condition and hospitalised, a day after two syringes of the drug pentobarbital failed to kill her. According to lawyer Stephen Ferrell, because of Pike’s “difficult” blood and vein condition, medical experts had predicted the intravenous line could shift or rupture the veins (infiltration).

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee called the situation a “tragedy” and announced a suspension of executions in the state for the rest of 2026, calling into question the execution scheduled for December 3 of another death-row inmate, Gary Wayne Sutton. Lee also ordered a comprehensive third-party review.

The Tennessee Department of Corrections said it followed all protocols: each set consists of four syringes — one with sterile solution, two with 50 millilitres of pentobarbital and another with solution. Pike’s botched execution comes after Tennessee earlier this year failed to execute Tony Carruthers, because a staff member failed to place the central line. Pike would have been the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years. In 1995, she, then 18, her boyfriend Tadaryl Shipp, 17, and another friend lured 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer into the Knoxville woods, where Shipp and Pike tortured and killed her; Pike suspected Slemmer was interested in Shipp.
