Trump says he regrets nominating three Supreme Court justices: Gorsuch, Barrett and Kavanaugh
President Donald Trump has said he regrets nominating three Supreme Court justices — Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett and Brett Kavanaugh — who have ruled against him in recent decisions, as Reuters reports in an interview for Time magazine.
The interview took place on Monday. Asked “Do you regret nominating them?”, Trump answered “Yes. Yes.” and added: “What can I do? I put them there. They voted against me too often. I gave them the job of a lifetime, and they vote against me often.”
The U.S. president also admitted that he values loyalty — “I like loyalty, yes” — but stressed: “I don’t want loyalty. I want good decisions.”
The context of the statements comes after the Supreme Court’s decision refusing to allow a U.S. Postal Service rule that would have limited mail-in ballots in November’s midterm elections. After that, Trump wrote on Truth Social that his nominees “are just a shell of their original selves”.
In February, when the court struck down his global tariffs by a 6-3 vote, with Gorsuch and Barrett in the majority, he specifically criticised Gorsuch and Barrett.
Trump nominated Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Barrett during his first presidential term, building the 6-3 conservative majority on the Supreme Court.
