Trump: U.S. is winning the war with Iran ‘with great ease’ — war will end soon

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that the United States is winning the war with Iran “with great ease” and that the war will end soon. He made the comments while speaking to the press at the White House, Al Jazeera reports.

The remarks come just a day after Trump told Axios he was weighing “a big decision”: whether or not to “annihilate” the Iranians. “Do I go in and annihilate them, or not?” he said on Thursday, calling the choice “a big decision”.

Today’s tone from the president was markedly more optimistic: he expressed confidence the conflict is heading toward an end, though he gave no details on any concrete plan or timeline.

The U.S.–Iran war, which began in February, has entered its seventh month with rising costs — on Friday alone the Pentagon told Congress the bill has reached $45.1 billion — while a new Fox News poll shows 60 percent of American voters call starting the war a mistake.

Earlier this week Trump had said he had spoken directly with Tehran and that the war is “perhaps nearing its end” — but Iranian officials have dismissed claims of direct talks.
