U.S. Blocks Iranian Nuclear Chief from Attending IAEA Annual Conference in Vienna
The head of Iran’s nuclear program has been blocked from attending the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) annual General Conference in Vienna, following opposition from the United States, according to Al Jazeera’s live war coverage.
The blocking comes at a time when Iran’s nuclear program remains one of the central issues of the U.S.–Iran war. President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened strikes on Pickaxe Mountain, a fortified site near the damaged uranium enrichment facility at Natanz, where two deep tunnel complexes are located. Trump has cited weakening Iran’s nuclear capabilities as one of the war’s objectives.
Iran insists its uranium enrichment program is for peaceful purposes and that it does not possess nuclear weapons. The IAEA General Conference, held every year in Vienna, is the main international forum for nuclear issues.
