U.S. Congressman: “Political Bias Has No Place in The Hague”

U.S. Congressman Keith Self on Wednesday voiced concern via a post on “X” over what he considers the influence of political bias in decision-making by justice institutions in The Hague. The reaction came just before the verdict against Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi.

“A consistent theme emerging from The Hague seems to be allowing political bias to influence their decisions,” Self wrote on X.

He added that he hopes such bias will not be on display during the verdict in the case against the four former KLA leaders.

Self, who chairs the Europe Subcommittee on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, also linked the issue to the broader situation in the region, describing the Balkans as a “powder keg.”

According to him, there are oppressive regimes in the region that would prefer to fuel division rather than work toward reconciliation.

“A consistent theme emerging from The Hague seems to be allowing political bias to influence their decisions. It is my hope that such bias will not be on display this week when a decision is handed down in the trial of Hashim Thaci and three Albanian civilians who fought for independence from years of Serbian oppression. The Balkans are a powder keg in a region where oppressive regimes would want nothing more than to fan the flames of division rather than work toward reconciliation,” he wrote.
